A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
