The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
